Tom Hardy talks Mad Max: Fury Road

Whilst promoting John Hillcoat’s very decent-looking Lawless, Tom Hardy has been chatting about George Miller’s long-delayed Mad Max reboot…

When we spoke to George Miller towards the end of last year, he explained that a conflation of the Iraq war, Mel Gibson’s much-publicised shenanigans, and unprecedented rainfall in the Australian desert (where the film was prepped to begin shooting in early 2011) had kept the cameras from rolling on his Mad Max: Fury Road reboot. Miller’s revised plan ran thusly: lose Gibson, add Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, up sticks to Namibia, and shoot in early 2012.

Early 2012 having come and gone, Fury Road lead Tom Hardy was asked in Cannes today what the  progress was on Mad Max 4 and 5. “We keep moving that around, you know?” Hardy told Empire Magazine, “I’ve been on stand-by for two years… but it’s all part of it. It’s kind of the cool thing to do, to be elusive with dates and all that.”

Displaying as hearty a sense of humour as he is facial hair at the moment, Hardy added, “It was going to be a year of filming, then six months, and now we’re supposed to be doing it in six days. It’s a musical – we’re going to go around shopping centres in a little wagon and sing songs. People were expecting big, but we’re going to give them small. It’ll be a live, free-running musical and it’s coming to a place near you soon.”

You know what? We don’t think he’s being entirely serious about that.
