Yet another classic game takes the Kickstarter route to market, this time it’s Carmageddon: Reincarnation…
Now that there are so many Kickstarter projects for classic games firing up left, right and centre, it's easy to become a little desensitised to the initial wow factor the crowdfunding craze generated when Tim Shafer, ahem, kicked things off.
Since then we've had Shadowrun, Wasteland 2, Leisure Suit Larry and more. However, despite a funding overload producing an inevitable ‘meh' reaction to some other announcements, this next announcement couldn't fail to catch our eye. Yes, the original automotive gorefest is set to return, as Carmageddon: Reincarnation has been unleashed on the site.
Re-appropriating the license for the game, original developer, Stainless Games, is working on Carmageddon: Reincarnation and needs a final $400,000 to complete the title, having already ploughed in a considerable amount of dough.
The original Carmageddon was about as controversial as games get back in its day in 1997, with the media branding it evil and even the Pope trying to get the game banned. Heavily influenced by sci-fi flick, Death Race 2000, the game saw players race loosely around a flexible, often totally open track. Whilst you could race for first position, it was far more enjoyable to ignore these rules and go on a rampage, killing pedestrians and utilising all manner of wacky weapons against your fellow racers.
Although looking very dated today, the game, and its sequel, Carmageddon 2: Carpocalypse Now, were groundbreaking titles. They helped introduced and popularise 3D physics, open world racetracks, LAN multiplayer and even the ability to create your own replay movies. The games could also be modded, opening then up for the community. The third title, Carmageddon: TDR 2000 wasn't a patch on the previous two releases, however, so we'll ignore that.
The new game is set to be a HD re-imaging of the series, and should follow the same, tried and tested gameplay of the originals, but will pack in updated physics, visuals and a host of extra features.
With Twisted Metal's return to PS3 leaving many players with a bitter taste, Carmageddon's return could be well timed, and at the time of writing, the Kickstarter target had already reached $117,149, with 28 days to go.
So, if you're up for some controversial, high speed brutality that lets you fling foes miles with giant springs, then visit the Kickstarter page and donate some cash to the cause.
