Following his trio of studio comedies David Gordon Green's next project is set to be a remake of Dario Argento's Suspiria. And he's recently been discussing his plans.

Once a director of indie films, David Gordon Green’s career took a surprising turn a few years back when he moved to mainstream comedic fare. And if that didn’t surprise people enough, the director has been planning a remake of the Dario Argento classic Suspiria for some time.

Whilst on the publicity trail for his latest film The Sitter, he's been chatting about his plans, and specifically, whether Black Swan had a negative effect on getting the film made.

“No, that adds to it", he said. "That means there’s an audience for prestige in genre, and to me, that’s exciting. We’re really close to getting that movie made if I can get over a couple more budgetary hurdles I think I can pull it off. My version doesn’t really have any similarities to Black Swan, but it proves to the marketplace that you can take a great risk and you can have something that has great artistic ambition, but also has incredible commercial appeal."

The question about Black Swan is of course relevant given just how apparent the influence of Argento on the film seemed.

Certainly the commercial and critical success of Black Swan, and the fact that the original Suspiria is still held in such high regard, not only places a huge amount of pressure on Green, but also makes you question why would you bother trying to remake it.

If a remake of Deep Red gets announced I think a little piece of me will die inside.

More on the Suspiria remake when we get it.
