The directors of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and 21 Jump Street have been chatting about their upcoming Lego film...
Arguably on the surface, a movie about Lego could be seen as being quite ridiculous. But like the toy itself, a world of possibilities are ready to be taken advantage of. With the creative team behind the excellent Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, as well as Chris McKay of Robot Chicken fame being down as directors, it sounds more and more like a fine plan.
Lord and Miller are currently on promotional duties for 21 Jump Street they have been asked about the project and stated that it will be “pretty crazy” and “it involves many worlds. Basically, the least qualified Lego characters in the universe having to keep the world from being frozen together.” They also revealed that the film will carry the title Lego: The Piece of Resistance.
In addition to the above, they have previously stated that “...the vast majority of the film takes place in an immersive all-Lego environment… It’s going to take place in a universe that’s made entirely out of Lego to the point where if there’s water or clouds or like a big explosion, that will be made out of animated Legos.”
So, not unlike the range of Lego videogames, then.
The commitment to keeping their Lego universe real, as it were, extends to making sure the characters portrayed will have the same amount of movement as the Lego men and women we know and love.
Casting is expected to commence in the next few months, but given the nature of the production I would imagine that it will be some time before this hits cinemas. Still, on the positive side Animal Logic, the studio behind the likes of Happy Feet and Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole is set to handle the animation. Whilst I’m not overly keen on either of those films, it’s hard to deny that they’re anything less than visually stunning, particularly Legend of the Guardians.
