One of the many projects that Bryan Singer was juggling before he formally signed on to direct the next X-Men movie, X-Men: Days Of Future Past, was a big screen take on Battlestar Galactica. The news first broke of this back in 2011, and Singer was set to prioritise the project after a potential reboot of Excalibur, with which he was involved, died in development.
The response to the news of a big screen Galactica outing was quite mixed, with many arguing that the series had been successfully and recently rebooted by Ronald D Moore for the small screen, and it didn't need a fresh take for cinemas. It had been revealed that the movie was set to take its inspiration from the original television series rather than Moore's version. That suggested that Moore's version would be set aside when putting the new film together, although that was never really confirmed.
Now? We don't expect it to be for some time. Chatting to Coming Soon about Jack The Giant Slayer, which heads to cinemas next month, Singer has revealed that he remains keen to make a Battlestar Galactica movie, but that X-Men is his inevitable priority. "I have that one on hold for a moment", he said, "so hopefully, I'd love to be able to get back to that, but for now I'm just focused on this X-Men business".
If X-Men: Days Of Future Past, which Singer is shooting this year, proves to be a hit, then Fox is likely to push for a two year turnaround between it and the next installment. If Singer returns to direct that, then it's not hard to see Battlestar Galactica: The Movie drifting off the schedules indefinitely.
