Michael Bay offers an update on Transformers 4, with a new cast member and the revelation that it'll mark the start of a new trilogy...

Having completed one triptych of Transformers action disaster movies, Michael Bay's all set to make (or at least be involved in the production of) yet another trilogy based on Hasbro's shape-shifting robots. That's what we've learned from an update Bay himself wrote on his official website, which also states unequivocally that "Transformers 4 is not a reboot".

"This movie takes place exactly four years after the war in Chicago," Bay writes, referring to his 2011 billion-dollar blockbuster, Dark Of The Moon. "The story makes a very natural transition, and reason as to why we have a whole new cast. This Transformers will feel very different then the last three. We are embarking on a new trilogy."

We already know that Mark Wahlberg will be one of the new actors who'll replace the outgoing cast, which included Shia LaBeouf and a gallery of supporting stars including John Turturro, John Malkovich and Frances McDormand.

Alongside Wahlberg, Bay's revealed that he's also cast Jack Reynor, an Irish actor who Bay spotted in the indie drama What Richard Did. Bay writes that Reynor's acting chops and Dick Whittington-style move to the US impressed him enough to invite him on board.

"Jack Reynor, he is an Irish kid that came to America with 30 bucks in his pocket," Bay enthused. "Pretty ballsy. Seriously who does that?"

With Transformers 4 set for release in the summer of 2014, Bay should begin directing his sequel very soon. More news as it comes in.
