Back in 1995, Robin Williams was on a box office high, with both Jumanji and The Birdcage crossing the $100m barrier in the US within days of each other. The former, directed by Joe Johnston, wasn’t a bad movie, although it was very much made as digital effects were only just implementing the work that Jurassic Park had started. It’s hard to find less convincing monkeys in a movie.
In fact, Jon Favreau then went and did a film based around the same idea a lot better, with the criminally underappreciated Zathura.
Anyway, as it turns out, a new take on Jumanji is heading to the big screen. Columbia Pictures has hired Zach Helm to pen the screenplay for the new film. Helm previously penned Mr Magorium’s Wonder Emporium and Stranger Than Fiction. There’s no word on a director or timescale for the project yet.
