The marketing juggernaut for Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim clicks into gear, with a viral video clip and a document of some sort...

Artistically-shot giant monsters breaking things. That's the unofficial premise behind next year's Pacific Rim, and also the reason we're so looking forward to it. With director Guillermo del Toro bringing his darkly poetic sensibilities to the kaiju genre, it's already high up on our most anticipated films of 2013 list - and that's before we've even seen a frame of proper footage.

The first Pacific Rim trailer is set to appear in front of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which means we've 14 or so days to wait before we'll get a look at it. To warm us up before that event, Pacific Rim's marketing minds have clubbed together to bring us the following viral appetisers.

The first is a 35-second video of an 'emergency alert system', designed to kick in should a giant monster start kicking skyscrapers over or something. The second thing is a faxed document, purporting to be from the British Air Force, volunteering five pilots to help fight "the beast known as the Kaiju" following a "tragic Trespasser event" - presumably, the kicking over of skyscrapers somewhere in Japan.

The video comes from the movie's viral website, which provides a countdown to the trailer launch. There's also a world map, which suggests that, having battered much of the Pacific into complete darkness, the Kaiju will start trudging towards America's West Coast.

It's all rather coy at the moment, but we're expecting big things to emerge very soon. Big, skyscraper-kicking things.

Pacific Rim opens on 12th July 2013 in the UK.
