In a recent interview, James Cameron has revealed that he was beaten by a matter of hours in securing the rights to Jurassic Park.

James Cameron offered up a very interesting 'what could have been' scenario in a recent interview, as he revealed that he was close to signing on to adapt Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park and that Steven Spielberg only beat him in securing the rights by a couple of hours. He didn't stop there though as he went on to reveal what he would have done with the material:

“I'd have gone further. Nastier, much nastier... mine would have been Aliens with dinosaurs.”

Cameron goes on to explain that his version wouldn't have been able to match the charm of Spielberg's:

“When I saw the film I realised that I was not the right person to make the film, he was. Because he made a dinosaur movie for kids... dinosaurs are for 8-year-olds. We can all enjoy it, too, but kids get dinosaurs and they should not have been excluded for that. His sensibility was right for the film.”

Well, it's hard to say that isn't an enticing prospect right there. Cameron would have presumably come to Jurassic Park in-between Terminator 2 and True Lies, and it might have been the right film at the right time for him. That notwithstanding, we love the Spielberg version. Incidentally, Jurassic Park is being re-released in 3D on the 5th April 2013
