We perhaps shouldn't be surprised when major blockbusters receive the 3D post conversion treatment, but if there was one film we would have wagered would avoid this (outside of anything directed by Christopher Nolan) it would be Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim. As it turns out, it's lucky we didn't put any money on it, as Pacific Rim will indeed be getting a 3D bolt-on. With the film one of next summer's biggest gambles, presumably Warner Bros decided it wanted to maximise its cash-making chances. It's unclear whether Guillermo del Toro is keen on the idea, though.
del Toro was vocal in his views against 3D at Comic-Con earlier this year and said that he would resist any efforts by the studio to convert the film ahead of its release, citing concerns that, with the size of the creatures and robots involved, you wouldn't get the same sense of scale you would with 3D as you would with 2D. del Toro, to our knowledge, hasn't commented on this news, so we couldn't tell you if his feelings are still the same on the matter.
We remain desperately excited for Pacific Rim, though, and not just because it marks del Toro's return to the big screen. It looks like a cracking blockbuster movie, too.
More on the film as we get it.
