David Gordon Green recruits Nicolas Cage for the upcoming movie, Joe...

Working on the remake of Argento's Suspiria has done little to stop director David Gordon Green from looking ahead to his next project, and indeed lining up a star for it. The director will be tackling an adaptation of Larry Brown's novel Joe with a screenplay from Gary Hawkins, who directed a documentary on Larry Brown back in 2002.

Nicolas Cage is lined up to play the titular Joe, an ex-con who becomes a role model to a teenager named Gary Jones, who's trying to escape his alcoholic and violent father. Joe represents something of a safe haven in one of Mississippi's rougher areas.

Here's what Gordon Green had to say about the film: "When Larry Brown wrote the novel, he instantly created an iconic character of contemporary Southern literature. It is with great excitement that I've been able to work with Nicolas Cage to design an absolute and unexpected performance piece that is woven from the darkness, beauty, humour and environment of this material."

David Gordon Green's career has certainly been an interesting one. After being hailed as an indie cinema darling early in his career he went on to make comedies such as Your Highness and The Sitter, and indeed this film marks something of a departure also. Where it fits into his schedule isn't clear, as the aforementioned Suspiria remake is also on his slate. Plus, he's finishing up a comedy called Prince Avalanche starring Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch.
