It’s certainly a big-hitter when it comes to the single-player RPG market, but The Elder Scrolls series has yet to challenge the multiplayer world. That’s set to change thanks to the upcoming Elder Scrolls Online, which is due to be released on the PC, and hopes to challenge the likes of World Of Warcraft for a piece of the MMO pie.
However, the PC may not be the only platform that gets the online does of the Elder Scrolls, and the next wave of consoles may also partake in the action.
In an interview with Game Informer, Zenimax Online Studios’ Matt Firor stated that the company isn’t ruling out the game’s arrival on console, but the focus is currently on the PC.
“The worst thing you can do is worry about new platforms while in development," He said.
"We want to do what we're doing right now and then look around for further opportunities.
"There are a lot of rumours swirling around the next-gen coming back together with PCs. I haven't seen any of that, but I read all the rumour sites just like everyone else. It seems like things are going back to a more standard platform. That being said, we haven't thought about it heavily right now."
Firor also wasn’t able to confirm if a potential console version would be cross compatible with the PC incarnation, allowing players on both platforms to interact, and insisted it’s simply down to technological challenges, something that, understandably, without an idea of the capabilities of the new platforms, is impossible to predict.
If you look at the track record of The Elder Scrolls in recent years, it’s not really that much of a stretch to see the MMO make the move from PC just as its single player brethren have already done successfully. After all, consoles are now just as at home as the PC when online, and with keyboard support and other peripherals, there’s simply no reason why the online RPG wouldn’t work. Well, aside from the double-dip subscription people would have to pay if the game was to apply such charges. Would many pay for Xbox Live and a game subscription? Maybe we’ll find out when solid details when the next-gen consoles arrive.
