His work promoted the movies of such Hollywood talents as Guillermo del Toro, Steven Spielberg and erm, Gary Goddard, and beautifully depicted the square jaws of actors such as Michael J Fox, Harrison Ford and Dolph Lundgren.
Over an incredible career, Drew Struzan’s immaculately conceived posters have enticed a legion moviegoers into their nearest fleapit, and with Drew: The Man Behind The Poster, the artist finally gets the recognition he deserves. A feature-length documentary from filmmakers Erik Sharkey, Greg Boas and Charles Ricciardi, Drew charts Struzan’s career from his early period, where he worked on record covers and other commercial projects, to his gradual rise to prominence as America’s most prolific and creative poster artist.
Featuring contributions from the actors and filmmakers whose work Struzan helped promote – including Ford, del Toro, Spielberg and numerous others – The Man Behind The Poster also gives a rare glimpse of the artist at work. As one contributor points out, Struzan’s skills are such that he can even make something like Masters Of The Universe look like a must-see movie.
A firm US or UK release date for Drew hasn’t been announced yet, but we’ll share it with you as soon as we hear it. In the meantime, here’s that trailer – which is positively stuffed with Struzan’s marvellous artwork, and a particularly strategic cut from Harry Knowles to the poster for Beauty And The Beast. You can’t tell us that was a coincidence.
