Whatever your thoughts regarding M Night Shyamalan's take on The Last Airbender, it turned out to be quite a solid hit. Solid enough, anyway, for the director to land another major blockbuster movie.
His next film, then, is next summer's After Earth, a science fiction flick that stars both Will Smith and his son, Jaden. Garry Whitta has penned the script, and not too much was really known about the film beyond that. However, with San Diego Comic-Con around the corner, it's been confirmed that there will be an After Earth panel at the event. And, in advance of that, we have our first official synopsis from the movie.
As always, if you want to go into the film completely cold, it's best to look elsewhere now...
“In After Earth, one thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind’s new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (played by Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (played by Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.”
Make of all of that what you will. The film itself arrives in cinemas next June.
