It's been three years since Guillermo del Toro directed a movie. Fortunately, he's just started production on Pacific Rim, now with added Ron Perlman...
One of the most frustrating consequences of the funding fiasco that surrounded The Hobbit for so long is that we've had to wait far too long for a new film directed by Guillermo del Toro. del Toro eventually left The Hobbit, and tried to get At The Mountains Of Madness off the ground, which then ate up more of his time before failing to get the green light.
So it’s good news that he’s begun shooting a new movie at last. It's Pacific Rim, for Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures. In a recent interview he announced that shooting was set to begin on 14th November, so a good few days of production work should be done already.
The film is about a giant monster invasion that threatens Earth, and as means of defence, humans pilot giant robots to defend themselves. From the plot alone, it doesn’t sound particularly groundbreaking, but given del Toro’s directorial flair and ability to make human drama the focus, this should certainly be a film to look forward to.
Guillermo del Toro had the following to say about the film:
"We are working with actors that I absolutely adore. Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Charlie Hunnam, Ron Perlman. It’s really, it’s a very, very beautiful poem to giant monsters. Giant monsters versus giant robots. Twenty-five-story-high robots beating the crap out of 25-story-high monsters. We’re trying to create a world in which the characters are real and how it would affect our world politically, how it would affect the landscape if creatures like this really came out of the sea, etc."
It certainly sounds interesting from that description, and there’s a good mix of actors there. You might have noted too that Ron Perlman has been added to the cast list.
In the same interview del Toro revealed that work has been completed on a small horror film that he’s produced called Mama. That'll be worth keeping your eyes open for, given some of the impression projects that del Toro has helped bring to the screen. (The Orphanage and Julia’s Eyes, for instance).
Pacific Rim is set for release in Summer 2013 and Mama is expected sometime in 2012.
