The final instalment of Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s Three Colours Cornetto trilogy, The World’s End, has been a long time coming. But that wait is soon to be over: Pegg and Wright have announced that they intend to shoot this autumn, with a 2013 release planned.
Details have been gradually surfacing about the film, and thus far we’re aware that the movie centres around a pub crawl where friends Gary King (Pegg) and Andy Knight (Frost), along with other childhood friends, soon encounter an apocalyptic event.
Chatting to Empire, Simon Pegg describes the basic outline as "a crawl through twelve pubs, culminating in the final one, which is The World's End". Wright adds that "This is as much about where you grew up as the people you grew up with...it's also very silly. I would say it's darker, more personal and more silly."
After paying homage to zombie movies in Shaun of the Dead and action movies in Hot Fuzz, there has been much speculation as to what genre they would be exploring next. Wright answers that it's "hard to say", arguing that it's "a sci-fi comedy", going on to add "social science-fiction, look it up on Wikipedia and then bone up on John Christopher and John Wyndham".
So then: might this be an alien invasion/disaster movie in the vein of Day Of The Triffids? That'd be fun.
