The Fades, Sherlock and This Is England '88 are amongst the winners at the 2012 BAFTA TV Awards. Oh, and Rolf Harris.

Last night saw the handing out of the annual BAFTA Television Awards, in a posh ceremony hosted by Dara O Briain. And before we get to the full list of winners, there are just a couple of highlights we want to point out.

Firstly, in a list surprisingly quite light on Sherlock, and utterly bereft of Doctor Who. it was terrific to see Andrew Scott take home a prize for his terrific performance as Moriarty in the former. Sherlock deserved more, although ITV's Appropriate Adult also deserves, and got, a good share of credit. On the further plus side, Steven Moffat got a richly deserved special award, presented to him by Matt Smith and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Scroll down the winners, though, and some more highlights pop up. We've saluted Sky's commitment to British comedy of late, and were thus really rather pleased that Darren Boyd took home a gong for Spy. Furthermore, it was lovely to see Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton pick up a BAFTA for their excellent online work to compliment the marvellous Psychoville. Also: any prizes given to Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle are good. More of them, please.

Perhaps the biggest cheer from us last night though, apart from the thoroughly deserved fellowship to the mighty Rolf Harris, was reserved for The Fades. Here was a terrific series, that didn't quite set the ratings alight, to the point where the BBC pulled the plug on it after just one series. It was a disappointing decision then, and it looks even more panicky now. The Fades now has a BAFTA in its trophy cabinet, and our huge congratulations go to everyone involved in the show. To the BBC: please don't give up on quality shows quite so quickly next time?

One pity last night, incidentally, was just how much the BBC truncated its broadcast of the awards. Thus, Terry Pratchett's BAFTA for his wonderful Choosing To Die documentary got shoehorned into an assortment of clips at the end. Sigh.
